Guide to Rhode Island Communities

Housing Choice Voucher Program

As an RIHousing Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) holder, you have the ability to choose a rental home in one of 20 Rhode Island communities. We have created this guide to provide you with an overview of living in any of those communities. With a Housing Choice Voucher, you are required to pay 30-40% of your income towards rent. RIHousing will pay the balance of the rental payment directly to your landlord.

North Kingstown

North Kingstown is the second most populous town in South (Washington) County, but its proximity to the center of the state and its significant job center at Quonset Point makes it a highly livable community. Its major routes include Route 1 (north-south), locally known as Tower Hill Road/Post Road; Route 4 (north-south through the top half of the town), locally known as Colonel Rodman Highway; and Route 138 (east-west), which leads to Jamestown and Newport to the east. Its most well-known and historic village is Wickford, but its major shopping areas are along Post Road (Route 1) and the highway interchange at Route 4 and Ten Rod Road. North Kingstown is also home Wickford Junction, which is the last stop on the MBTA Commuter Line to Boston.

Living in North Kingstown:

About one-quarter of North Kingstown’s housing is multi-family and nearly one-third of its residents are renters. It is a desirable community for its central location, job center, as well as its well-regarded school system.

To use your voucher here, your rent cannot exceed the Fair Market Rate.

What is the Fair Market Rate?

FMRs regularly published by HUD, represent the cost to rent a moderately-priced dwelling unit in the local housing market. The housing voucher tenant must pay 30 percent of its monthly adjusted gross income for rent and utilities, and if the unit rent is greater than the payment standard, the tenant is required to pay the additional amount.
