Guide to Rhode Island Communities
Housing Choice Voucher Program
As an RIHousing Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) holder, you have the ability to choose a rental home in one of 20 Rhode Island communities. We have created this guide to provide you with an overview of living in any of those communities. With a Housing Choice Voucher, you are required to pay 30-40% of your income towards rent. RIHousing will pay the balance of the rental payment directly to your landlord.
Scituate
Scituate
Scituate is best known as the location of the state’s largest drinking-water reservoir serving more than 60 percent of Rhode Island’s residents and businesses. Given the substantial impact of the reservoir on the town’s land mass and ecology, commercial and other activity are largely limited to the northern half of the town, also known as North Scituate. The main east-west route across North Scituate is Danielson Pike, which branches off from Route 6 (Hartford Pike) and runs parallel to it through the village. Another area of some commercial activity is Route 102, which runs north-south along the town’s western border and is also known as Chopmist Hill Road. Located in the town’s southeast corner, the village of Hope borders the city of Cranston, and is the most densely populated residential area of the town.
Living in Scituate:
HCV holders are most likely to find rental opportunities in the village of Hope and along any of the main thoroughfares. There are some two-family homes in these areas, as well as modest single family homes.
To use your voucher here, your rent cannot exceed the Fair Market Rate.

What is the Fair Market Rate?
FMRs regularly published by HUD, represent the cost to rent a moderately-priced dwelling unit in the local housing market. The housing voucher tenant must pay 30 percent of its monthly adjusted gross income for rent and utilities, and if the unit rent is greater than the payment standard, the tenant is required to pay the additional amount.
