Project-Based Rental Assistance in Rhode Island

Find affordable rental housing

How project-based assistance works

Subsidized Housing Developments are rental communities with federally subsidized units for low-income individuals and families. With project-based assistance, the subsidy stays with the property—not the tenant—so the unit remains affordable for whoever lives there.

Do I qualify?

To live in a subsidized housing development, your household income must generally be at or below 80% of the area’s median family income (AMI) as determined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Income limits depend on household size and the community where the apartment is located. HUD updates median income levels each year, and they vary by location. Your local Public Housing Authority can give you the specific income limits for your area and household size.

How do I apply?

Each subsidized housing development manages its own waiting list. To apply, you’ll need to contact the management office of the development(s) where you’d like to live. They can provide applications, waiting list details, and additional information.
